At the heart of the story is Hani Lovett the daughter of the much-loved librarian from Troubles Creek. Hani must fight for her independence with the help of female mentors and books that offer freedom. Amidst the rugged mountains of Kentucky, Hani Lovett has always known that the old ways can make an already hard life even harder. The daughter of the famous blue-skinned librarian from the Pack Horse project, she and her family have spent their whole lives on the run from the law. But when her parents are imprisoned, Hani realises she must fight for her freedom, or she will be sent away for good. Following in her mothers old library route, Hani begins delivering books to remote corners of the Appalachians. She is determined to prove she can survive without being told what to do, but the journey proves dangerous, and not everyone in the region is willing to let a woman forge her own path. If Hani wants to bring the freedom that books offer, she will have to fight for her place in the world.
